| The
non official view of the radical fringe of
the cannabis law reform movement.
When
the cannabus arrived at
the N.S.W Drug Summit everyone expected us to take the big joint off the roof, race it
around to the front gate like a horde of angry students and try to shove it as far up the
governments arse as possible, all the while yelling Free Marijuana OR ELSE you bastards.
That was never part of the plan, I mean its not as if the Peoples Drug Summit was
committed to making drug use compulsory, just "Optional with out harassment."
Instead of a bunch of stone freaks, a crew of committed cannabist commandos hopped off the
bus and set immediately to creating a work of art, instead of confrontation we showed them
our compassion and our commitment to drug education and sensible drug law reform, we
demystified cannabis use and we related to the individuals who make up the government in a
way that no other previous protesters have ever been able to do.
As the demonstration progressed, the individuals who make up the government could see that
we REALLY had the support of the real people, after all, it was the real people who gave
us the key to the back door of the city, and it was the real people helped us in every
which ever way they could, indeed, by the time the week was over, we found that we could
only count the enemies of drug law reform on one hand.
Just a hand full of people, most of whom havent redefined their opinions since the
1950s, are firmly committed to the continuation of the drug war, these self
appointed guardians of a moral code of conduct from a by gone era obviously still believe
that the average man cannot be trusted to do the right thing and they obviously believe
that the common man is, at best, tool to be used for their own ends, at worst a
recalcitrant child that responds only to the whip. A hand full of people who we still need
to reach, just a hand full
.
So where do we go from here? The non official view of the radical fringe of the Cannabis
Law Reform Movement is that Decriminalization is a major break through in the sensible
re-integration of cannabis back into society. The feeling here amongst the workers at the
unofficial Head Quarters of the radical fringe of the Cannabis Law Reform Movement
(secretly located High in the hills above Nimbin) is that Decriminalization may yet turn
out to be the best thing to happen since the invention of Internet, provided that is, that
the government set the levels of personal combustibles at a realistic level, for example.
Decriminalisation
could mean an environment of education will be able to flourish, it could mean that the
government will be able to reallocate the resources currently consumed by prohibition to
more humanistic projects.
Decriminalisation should mean an end to the lonely smoker syndrome and if the minimum
levels are set high enough, it will mean that organised crime will no longer bother with
the distribution of the low profit substance that cannabis will become when
everybody can grow it.
Decriminalisation means that cannabis will become de-cooled in the eyes of the youth,
indeed, cannabis may soon be regarded as "just another" personal habit, not
dissimilar to tobacco use.
Decriminalisation means that a commercial hemp industry is possible, I say possible when I
really should be saying probable, I am sure the government realises a high employment
industry with huge local & export potential awaits, just an act of legislation away.
Decriminalisation mostly means that a whole level of society - the poor- will be able to
divert more of their available dollars towards improving their physical living conditions
and ultimately it means that N.S.W will become a more prosperous, friendlier and less
stressed out place to live.
Words assembled by
the nonofficial smokesperson at
the extreme edge of the radical fringe
of the Cannabis Law Reform Movement.
P.S It
is perhaps worth pointing out that the radical fringe of the cannabis law reform movement
was initially appalled by the decision to decriminalize, standing for -as we do- the right
of the individual to determine the chemical content of their blood stream- how ever, we,
the radical fringe of the Cannabis Law Reform Movement believe that when the government
looks at ALL the facts about drugs that they will see that Legalization of all drugs is
the only rational solution.
Till next,
Peace
